【I tried】Five tips for extending lithium-ion battery life

Lithium-ion has not yet fully matured and is still improving. Notable advancements have been made in longevity and safety while the capacity is increasing incrementally. Today, Li-ion meets the expectations of most consumer devices but applications for the EV need further development before this power source will become the accepted norm.

It doesn't take long to understand how to help keep the battery current. What is not known is how to care for the battery itself. This is equally important. This will make the battery run efficiently. Here are a few ways to keep your lithium-ion battery healthy.

1: Keep the battery at room temperature

That means between 20 and 25 degrees C. The worst thing that can happen to a lithium-ion battery is to have a full charge and be subjected to elevated temperatures. So don't leave or charge your mobile device's battery in your car if it's hot out. Heat is by far the largest factor when it comes to reducing lithium-ion battery life.

2: Consider buying a high-capacity lithium-ion battery instead of carrying a spare battery

The battery will deteriorate over time, whether or not it is used. Therefore, the battery life of the backup battery will not be longer than that of the battery in use. It is important to remember the aging characteristics when purchasing batteries. Be sure to ask about the product with the latest production date.

3: Allow partial discharge and avoid complete discharge (usually)

Unlike nickel-cadmium batteries, lithium-ion batteries have no charge memory. This means that a deep discharge cycle is not required. In fact, the battery uses a partial discharge cycle better.

There is an exception. Battery experts recommend that the lithium-ion battery should be almost completely discharged after 30 cycles of charging. Continuous partial discharge produces a condition called digital memory that reduces the accuracy of the device power meter. Therefore, let the battery discharge to the cutoff point and then recharge. The power meter will be recalibrated.

4: Avoid complete discharge of lithium-ion batteries

If the battery voltage of a lithium-ion battery is lower than 2.5 volts per battery, the built-in safety circuit of the battery will turn on and the battery seems to be exhausted. The original charger is useless. Only battery analyzers with boost function can charge the battery.

Also, for safety reasons, do not charge deep-discharged lithium-ion batteries if they have been stored in this condition for several months.

5: For long-term storage, discharge the lithium-ion battery to about 40% and store it in a cool place.

My laptop always has an extra battery, but it will never be as long as the original battery. I know this now because I fully charge the battery. This means that lithium ions have the highest oxidation rate. It is recommended to discharge the lithium ion battery by 40% and put it in the refrigerator (not the refrigerator).

Lithium-ion batteries are a huge improvement over previous types of batteries. It is not unheard of to get 500 charge/discharge cycles from a lithium-ion battery. Just follow the above guidelines.
