How Big Is The Market For Marine Power Batteries?

78 Published by BSLBATT Jan 18,2021

The application scenario of lithium batteries is essential for wearing, holding, and running on the road. Now, the application of lithium batteries in the upstream ship market is getting better, and the development of a blue ocean is underway. BSLBATT’s 12V 100AH lithium battery is popular with fishing enthusiasts and rowing enthusiasts. 12V 100AH lithium battery is gradually opening up the potential marine lithium battery market for us.

Recreational fishing boats have also been fitted with power batteries. In August 2020, Qinhuangdao, Hebei Province of China launched China’s first battery-powered hybrid recreational fishing boat, with the first two vessels put into use. It is understood that the total length of the Qinhuangdao electric propulsion recreational fishing boat is 36 meters, 6.6 meters wide, and 2.95 meters deep. The ship power system adopts the innovative power system form tailored to the recreational fishing boat, realizing the organic combination of diesel engine, unit, and lithium battery pack and other forms of energy.

The ship’s power battery system uses a lithium-iron-phosphate battery system tailored for battery-powered/hybrid ships, which mainly includes a deeply integrated high-pressure control cabinet and a modular battery pack. Battery pack protection grade IP67, modular design with high reliability, high discharge rate, high assembly and wiring efficiency, low noise, low-temperature rise characteristics.

The Lithium-Ion Market Is Dynamic

It can be used in RVs, Golf Carts, Sweepers, or Forklifts, and now there are more and more Marine Applications.

Statistics show that about 80% of international trade is carried out by ship, which is a serious environmental pollution problem. It is estimated that sulfur emissions from a 10,000-container ship are equivalent to 270,000 heavy trucks under normal conditions. Without effective mitigation measures, the shipping industry will account for 12-18% of global greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

In order to cope with the impact of ship operation on the environment, countries begin to actively seek alternative power fuels for ships, hoping to greatly reduce the use of traditional diesel-powered ships. Electric boats, powered by pure electricity, are favored by the shipping industry because of their zero pollution emissions. Compared with traditional oil-powered ships, electric ships have unique advantages in controlling waste emission pollution and noise pollution.

Alex Holland, the analyst at IDTechEx, said: “The shipping industry’s projections suggest that emissions will rise sharply in the coming years, which could create demand for lithium-ion and hybrid ships.” He describes ocean applications as the “low-hanging fruit” for lithium-ion battery applications.

The Marine industry is already making the transition to a low-carbon future. While batteries are unlikely to play a significant role in deep-sea ships on long voyages, they could be used in smaller and shallow-water vessels.

The bulk of the industry’s demand comes from ferries, which are well suited to batteries because of infrastructure that can be easily recharged at terminal destinations and because they reduce operating costs for businesses through fuel savings.

In September 2020, the Maritime Battery Forum (MBF) concluded that while all-electric long-distance ships are a distant technology, hybrid ships are a real possibility.

“With existing technology, the potential for batteries for large ocean-going ships lies in hybrid power,” said MBF. As mentioned in Research and Markets, the global maritime analytics market was valued at US$ 894.28million in 2019 and is expected to reach US$ 1,833.50 million by 2027; It is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 10.0% during 2020-2027. Therefore, the market prospect of Marine lithium iron phosphate battery is worth looking forward to.

Lithium-Iron Phosphate Batteries Benefit Most

Lithium iron phosphate batteries are the best choice for Marine power because of their good safety, long cycle performance, high-temperature stability, and low cost.

Eric Yi, CEO of Wisdom Power, said: “Lithium-iron phosphate batteries have become the best choice for Marine power batteries because of their high safety, long life, low cost, and balanced performance.”

In terms of energy density, the single energy density of lithium iron phosphate batteries used in electric ships has been increased from 100Wh/kg to 160Wh/kg, and the energy density of the system has also been greatly improved.

In recent years, lithium iron phosphate power battery and BMS battery management system have developed rapidly, and the improvement of charge-discharge ratio makes the ship startup speed and power control better, so it has been equipped with the technical conditions for promotion and application in ships.

Corresponding to the advantages of lithium iron phosphate batteries, most of the Marine lithium batteries in the market are lithium iron phosphate batteries.

Battery System Provides Reliable Power

Industry Difficulties And Bottlenecks

In the market of ship electrization, which is in the preliminary stage of development, there are also some problems such as safety, technology, economy, and imperfect supporting facilities.

The first is security. Lithium-ion batteries may cause safety accidents such as combustion and explosion due to overcharge, over-discharge, battery short circuit, and thermal shock, etc.

Lithium-ion battery combustion accidents occur from time to time all over the world. In October 2019, the MF Ytteroyningen, a passenger ship owned by Norwegian ferry company Norled, suffered a serious gas explosion in the battery room, and 12 firemen were taken to hospital after being exposed to harmful gases related to the battery. The key to the successful entry of the electric ship with high safety requirements into the shipping market depends on whether the systematic problems of operation safety can be solved.

The second is technology. At present, the energy storage density of electric ship energy storage battery is the primary technical difficulty affecting the development of the electric ship. Just as the development of pure electric heavy trucks is limited by the severe injury of “short-range, self-importance”, the electric ship is also facing the same problem – range and self-weight are mutually restricted, it is difficult to have both. The greater the endurance capacity of electric ship battery, the greater space and weight it takes up, and the greater the corresponding sacrifice of shipload, which leads to the further reduction of the economy of electric ship operation.

The third is the cost. At present, small-capacity electric boats are widely used in the short-distance and small-volume transportation fields such as ferries and sightseeing boats, and their endurance requirements are not high. The battery of large capacity electric ships should not only meet certain power requirements but also have high endurance. Such a huge demand for battery capacity undoubtedly increases the construction cost of the electric ships.

At the same time, since Marine lithium batteries typically last 10 years, compared with 30 years for ships, the cost of battery replacement during the lifetime of high-capacity electric ships is also high.

Fourth, it is not perfect. For ports, the initial construction investment of power supply facilities is large, and the cost of operation and maintenance is high. The return rate of charging facilities with huge investment is low, which makes the construction of shore-based charging facilities unable to carry out the large-scale commercial expansion.

In addition, product and technical standards are not unified, which also limits the development of the electric ship industry. In the field of electric ships, no technical standards for charging equipment have been established so far, and the current charging equipment for electric ships is still “one ship, one policy”.

The newly emerging market for electric ships will also have problems like this or that in the initial rise of electric vehicles. However, the process of development should not give up eating for fear of choking. As long as the direction is right, the market of ship electrization will be promising.
