In September 2020, the Maritime Battery Forum (MBF) concluded that while all-electric long-distance ships are a distant technology, hybrid ships are a real possibility.

Industry Difficulties And Bottlenecks
In the market of ship electrization, which is in the preliminary stage of development, there are also some problems such as safety, technology, economy, and imperfect supporting facilities.
The first is security. Lithium-ion batteries may cause safety accidents such as combustion and explosion due to overcharge, over-discharge, battery short circuit, and thermal shock, etc.
Lithium-ion battery combustion accidents occur from time to time all over the world. In October 2019, the MF Ytteroyningen, a passenger ship owned by Norwegian ferry company Norled, suffered a serious gas explosion in the battery room, and 12 firemen were taken to hospital after being exposed to harmful gases related to the battery. The key to the successful entry of the electric ship with high safety requirements into the shipping market depends on whether the systematic problems of operation safety can be solved.
The second is technology. At present, the energy storage density of electric ship energy storage battery is the primary technical difficulty affecting the development of the electric ship. Just as the development of pure electric heavy trucks is limited by the severe injury of “short-range, self-importance”, the electric ship is also facing the same problem – range and self-weight are mutually restricted, it is difficult to have both. The greater the endurance capacity of electric ship battery, the greater space and weight it takes up, and the greater the corresponding sacrifice of shipload, which leads to the further reduction of the economy of electric ship operation.
The third is the cost. At present, small-capacity electric boats are widely used in the short-distance and small-volume transportation fields such as ferries and sightseeing boats, and their endurance requirements are not high. The battery of large capacity electric ships should not only meet certain power requirements but also have high endurance. Such a huge demand for battery capacity undoubtedly increases the construction cost of the electric ships.
At the same time, since Marine lithium batteries typically last 10 years, compared with 30 years for ships, the cost of battery replacement during the lifetime of high-capacity electric ships is also high.
Fourth, it is not perfect. For ports, the initial construction investment of power supply facilities is large, and the cost of operation and maintenance is high. The return rate of charging facilities with huge investment is low, which makes the construction of shore-based charging facilities unable to carry out the large-scale commercial expansion.
In addition, product and technical standards are not unified, which also limits the development of the electric ship industry. In the field of electric ships, no technical standards for charging equipment have been established so far, and the current charging equipment for electric ships is still “one ship, one policy”.
