Golf Cart Battery Replacement: Best Replacement Strategies

Replacing your golf cart battery is probably one of the most overlooked items on your to-do list. When you're out camping or exploring trails too far from home, you may experience some major inconveniences if they aren't working or charging properly.

The power source of an electric golf cart is made up of 4, 6, or 8 separate cells that are linked in a series. This number varies depending on whether the cart is powered by a 36-volt or 48-volt system, and the voltage of the battery. In order for your golf cart battery to work exactly the way you want it to, you have to make sure it’s the correct type and voltage. When there is insufficient power, the vehicle will have difficulty driving, starting, and other aspects of driving.

Replace only one or two bad batteries rather than all the batteries in your golf cart. Is this method suitable for replacing a golf cart battery?

Should I replace one piece at a time or all at once?

Golf cart owners often ask “How should I replace the battery, one at a time or all at once?” And depending on who you ask, there are bound to be different answers! Others are happy to spend a little more every time they recharge the batteries of their favorite hobby. Some people like to save money and don’t like to spend too much unnecessary money.

Can you really save money? This needs to be discussed in more detail.

Technically, when replacing a golf cart lithium battery, you only replace one golf cart battery. This is not advisable as each battery may be permanently damaged. Whenever a battery becomes damaged, it should be replaced. Although it may seem frustrating at first, it may end up saving you money and trouble in the long run. Make sure to replace your golf cart’s battery immediately so that you can enjoy it smoothly without any unnecessary hassle.

If instead of replacing all the batteries, what happens if only one or some of them are replaced?

The cost of replacing one or two batteries is relatively small, but is it worth it in the long run?  The performance of one unit affects the entire battery pack, which is not what we want. Let’s take a closer look at what happens if you replace just one or two batteries, instead of replacing them all at once.

1. Insufficient battery life

Replacing just one or two batteries can damage your golf cart battery pack, making it difficult to charge and shortening the life of the new battery you purchase. During charging, the total battery voltage is measured rather than the voltage of each cell. Therefore, if a new battery is installed next to an old, depleted battery, the performance level of the old battery may be reduced.

2.Battery power imbalance

Replacing just one or two batteries instead of all batteries may result in an imbalanced battery. It doesn’t help that newer batteries will release power more efficiently, but older batteries will encounter too much resistance due to age and condition. If there is a power imbalance between the batteries in your golf cart, you may experience acceleration lag and slow speeds.

3. Longer charging time

Batteries take longer to charge. Combining old and new batteries in a shopping cart does not allow the charger to differentiate between them. Therefore, it continues to charge the batteries until they reach maximum capacity, which is a process that takes longer than necessary. Charging a new battery for a long time will affect its performance. Deep circulation should be reduced.

Just replacing the old battery isn’t the best solution. At first, it may seem more cost-effective to replace batteries one at a time, but over time, the cost adds up. Replacing all batteries usually provides a long-term solution.

If you still find an imbalance after replacing all the batteries, you can perform a voltage test. It is highly recommended to replace all batteries, but in this case, it is acceptable to replace only one or two problematic batteries.

When should you replace your golf cart battery?

Batteries have a limited life, and it’s not always clear when they need to be replaced. Ignoring a dead battery is never a good idea. The following signs will appear when the battery is discharged:

1.Battery life is too long

When you use your golf cart regularly, it’s easy to spot any issues. If the battery frequently fails, charges incorrectly, or is completely damaged, the condition of the battery may affect your comfort and safety in the vehicle.

2. Charging time is longer

When charging the battery, you may notice that it takes a long time. Your battery may need to be replaced if it used to charge in four to five hours, but now it takes eight or more hours.

Depending on the model of your car and road surface, the BSLbatt lithium battery can be fully charged in just 30 minutes and guarantee a range of 40-60 miles.

3. A leak in the battery acid

Battery cases and lids can crack and leak acid as they swell and leak acid over time. A leak around the battery pack is most likely acid, and the battery needs to be replaced.

4. Power and acceleration decrease

With today’s cutting-edge golf carts, you can do much more than simply drive from one place to another. Golf carts should respond almost instantly when you press the gas pedal. Battery replacement may be necessary if it takes longer than usual. It is impossible to resist the strong feeling of pushing the back wheel and the sensation of the front wheel hanging in mid-air!

When you replace your golf cart battery, how long will it last?

Knowing how long your battery will last is essential when investing in a new battery pack. The battery life expectancy in cycles can be found here or you can read a general overview of golf cart batteries and how they are used here. Lithium batteries from BSLbatt are expected to last between eight and fifteen years, depending on how often they are used. The money you save upfront may end up costing you more in the long run if you choose a flooded battery but do not maintain it.

A golf cart battery needs to be replaced every few years. How much does it cost?

Golf cart batteries can be expensive, as you may be surprised to learn. A golf card’s size and battery type determine which size you need. Batteries are also priced differently depending on whether they are sealed lead-acid batteries, flooded lead-acid batteries, or lithium batteries. There are many similarities between sealed lead-acid (SLA) batteries and car batteries, but lithium batteries are the best if you want them to last a long time and keep costs low. When you need new batteries for a cart with four, six or even eight batteries, the price can be over $1,000!

Charge your devices with a quality charger

For your new golf cart battery, be sure to purchase a quality charger. You shouldn’t take any chances when it comes to your battery’s health, so don’t use inferior or outdated batteries! Using a good charger simply requires plugging it in and letting it run its diagnostics and/or balance charge.
